UK Young Artist of the Year Award

Saatchi Gallery, London 2019

The Robert Walters Group UK Young Artist of the Year Award, in partnership with Saatchi Gallery will discover and champion exceptional artists who are representative of contemporary Britain.

Within the brief of 'Diversity' judges sought artists and works which express original voices of exceptional artistic quality, and reflect the following:

Diversity of experience
Diversity of expression
Diversity of thought

What is contemporary Britain?

The inaugural award presents dynamic artworks from ten artists, selected from 500 UK-wide submissions.

This exhibition seeks to provide insight into a plethora of artists' experiences of living and working in the UK today; their own unique and diverse perspectives. The ten finalists provide us with a selection of work exploring the diasporic image; heritage and hybridity; everyday; and domestic encounters.

The presentation of works curated by Garth Gratrix seeks to explore commonality amidst competition. Collectively the work is placed in a way that tests newfound relationships between artists, cultures, materials and compositions. Works in competition are asked to perform and share space together: How can one enhance and support the other? What unifies the artists' cultural experiences?
